Vertical Triad Pairs
Vertical Triad Pairs
You’ve probably heard about triad pairs. Simply put, they consist of 2 neighboring diatonic triads extracted from any given scale. Their purpose is to create harmonic motion by moving between them and by doing so, also sounding 6 of the 7 notes from the scale in a non scalar fashion.
Nonetheless, there is an inherent limitation in the way they are conventionally taught and employed. Due to the fact that you are always dealing horizontally with 2 neighboring triads, you can only cover a limited range. The solution lies in stacking the triad pairs vertically! And this is how many of the great post bop musicians come up with those broad-range 6 note arpeggios…
In this video, after demonstrating the concept, I show you how to apply vertical triad pairs over different II-V-I progressions to create contemporary sounding jazz lines!
