Pat Metheny wove a hybrid-picking and tapping lick through many of his solos in the nineties, and in this lesson I trace exactly where that sound came from. It turns out to go back further than jazz itself, rooted in the keyboard writing of J.S. Bach during the baroque period. I break down the unique technique behind it, picking and fingerstyle plucking on the right hand combined with tapping on the left, and show how the four-note building block at its center can be reshaped to fit almost any set of chord changes.

You will walk away able to apply Pat Metheny's hybrid-picking and tapping lick over both major and minor progressions, and to play wide interval jumps cleanly even at faster tempos. I also walk through a full etude I wrote over "All The Things You Are" that pulls the whole concept together in a real musical context. I would love for you to give it a try and hear what you come up with.
