“Moanin‘” was written by pianist Bobby Timmons and first recorded, by Art Blakey‘s band the Jazz Messengers, on October 30, 1958. It is considered one of the tunes that helped to generate the “Hard Bop” style of the late ’50s and early ’60s. Influenced by blues and gospel, “Moanin‘” makes use of call-and-response technique between the piano and horns.
