This is the 3rd in a series of Coltrane Guitar Perspectives on using pentatonics. In the previous 2 installments, I showed you how the legendary John Coltrane pioneered the use of the common minor pentatonic and the kumoi pentatonic of Japanese origin by super-imposing them over different chord progressions.

In this occasion I want to introduce you to my favorite pentatonic….the Major b6! And this is so because it contains the notes of a melodic minor, which as you probably know is very useful in jazz! Furthermore, throughout the years I’ve grown very fond of it after hearing it it frequently in the playing of some of my favorite post-bop jazz guitarists, such as John Scofield and John Abercrombie.
